WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE HANDMADE SOAP?
Generally, the commercial "soaps" carried at most chain stores are loaded with chemical additives such as preservatives, sulfates and lather boosters that dry out your skin and can lead to rashes and other skin irritations. The commercial soap bars that line most grocery stores’ shelves are actually synthetic detergents, not real soap. While that's wonderful for your dishes, it's not very good for your skin.
WHAT IS HANDMADE SOAP?
Soap is a combination of water (liquid), lye (sodium hydroxide) and oils. When the lye solution is mixed with oils, it causes a chemical reaction called "saponification". The result is 3 parts soap and 1 part glycerin: which is desired for it's ability to moisturize the skin.
Properly made handmade soap contains NO LYE in the end product. You cannot make real soap without lye.
No Lye = No Soap!
WHAT IS "SUPERFATTING"?
Superfatting means that a certain percentage of oils have been left unconverted by the lye. This is done by discounting the amount of lye in my recipe. It leaves extra moisturizing oils in the soap for your skin to use along with the naturally occurring glycerin and ensures a safe, milder bar of soap.
I HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN. IS HANDMADE SOAP SAFE TO USE?
Most likely, you will be able to use our soaps because they are incredibly mild and gentle. Most commercial soaps are detergent based, using lots of synthetic ingredients that cause skin reactions.
If you have allergies to fragrances, we offer a range of fragrance free soaps. Most of our soaps we offer fragrance free versions as well, at no extra cost to you.
All of our soaps are great for individuals with sensitive skin, with skin conditions such as eczema or acne, or for young (children) or mature skin.
DO YOU TEST ON ANIMALS?
We NEVER test on animals. Our products are tested by very willing family and friends, if a product does not pass the quality check and testing prior to being published // released, we will not offer it to the public.
DO YOU USE ANIMAL PRODUCTS IN YOUR SOAP?
All of our soaps are "Vegetarian Friendly" meaning, they are made using only vegetable based oils and butters. We never use animal fats such as lard or tallow. However, we do occasionally use Milk, Yogurt, Honey and cruelty free additives.
HOW LONG DOES YOUR SOAP STAY FRESH?
Our handmade artisan soap stays "fresh" for years. No, it's true! REAL handmade soap is like wine. It gets better with age. As the soap gets harder, it becomes longer lasting and milder. However, over time, the soap may loose it's fragrance intensity, so we recommend using within 6 months.
Our specialty and glycerin bars of soap will not spoil, however they can draw a lot of moisture from the air if not properly sealed before use. This is due to the high glycerin content, which is a natural humectant. A humectant is something that draws the moisture to it, helping to bring that moisture into the layers of skin as you wash leaving you soft.
NOTE - I've used a bar of Stone Dragon soap that was more than 6-7 months old, while it seemed not as strong smelling at first when I had made it, when I used it - BAM - it was just as intense! It was so mild and felt great on my skin, just as it had done before.
HOW LONG SHOULD MY BAR OF SOAP LAST?
Well that depends on how much mileage it gets. If properly stored and drained between uses, you can expect a bar to last at least 2-3 weeks or longer!
To extend the life of your soap:
- Allow to dry completely between use.
- Store on a well draining soap dish, or a place where it can dry.
- Avoid leaving soap in the spray of water.
- Never leave soap in standing water.
- Using a wash cloth, a shower puff (loofah) instead of rubbing it directly on the skin can help increase the use of the soap.
WHAT IS A RELEASE?
A release is essentially a product launch with fragrances and products geared or themed toward a specific time of the year. Although Lathercraft products are available to purchase year round, I do make seasonal products that are "limited editions" that are only available at certain times of the year. Limited Edition products tend to sell out quickly, so please sign up for our News Letter or like and follow us on social media (such as Facebook, Instagram, etc.) to stay up-to-date with Lathercraft's News.
WHAT IS A BATH BOMB?
A bath bomb is a combination of dry ingredients and skin loving wet ingredients, fragrance, and colorant, that when mixed together and dried create whatever shape they are pressed into. Once cured, they are ready for use by dropping it into a hot bath and they react with the water and bubble and fizz. By doing this, they mix in skin conditioning oils, fragrances and essential oils, can sometimes color the water (but will not stain the skin or tub), and can add bubbles. There is a whole range of benefits!
WHY USE A BATH BOMB?
There are a lot of great reasons to use a bath bomb! For those of you who especially love hot baths, it can be a pleasure no matter what. For one, it helps to relax you and actually enhances the bath experience itself. The hot bath actually can help you relieve stress, giving you a better mood! Secondly, it helps to cleanse your skin, nurture it, and leaves it smelling great. And lastly, it can help with circulation. Yes! Hot water immediately signals to your body to send blood to the skin's surface. This gives you a rosy, flushed look (sometimes a reddish color, for those of us who have fair skin). Your arteries and veins also expand temporarily, lowering your blood pressure by creating more room for your blood to flow through - thus, better circulation!
HOW MANY TIMES CAN I USE A BATH BOMB?
You can only use a bath bomb one time, because it is designed to condition and cleanse your skin. Our standard bath bombs are 7.5 ounces, and work well with a standard bath size.
WHY IS IT EXPENSIVE?
Our soaps may seem more expensive when compared to Big Store soap. You can get a handful of little plain bars, sometimes for a fraction of what one of our soaps may cost. Simply put, you're paying for quantity and not quality. Big Store soaps also remove a lot of the skin loving ingredients, turning it into a 'beauty' bar or more like a detergent. They can sit there and clean, but it doesn't help moisturize or condition the skin the way a handmade soap can! Then they sell you additional things, like lotions and creams, to keep cashing in on you. With our handmade soaps, they're left natural - and very pretty - and are of the highest quality ingredients that we can source. This means you won't need extras such as a $12.00 bottle of lotion to add to your six pack of soaps you got at the store for $4.00. In the long run, your wallet will thank you - and you get what you pay for.
While bath bombs may seem pretty costly for a one time use, rest assure, your money is well spent with the quality of your product. We are actually cheaper than a lot of the chain stores / franchises, but still strive to provide great, skin loving and vegan products that are not only useful but beautiful and smells great too. Help support a local, handmade business and our American dream!
